What is a Collective Agreement?

Our Collective Agreement sets out our rights and responsibilities at work. It is a contract between the Canadian Union of Public Employees - which represents us - and our Employer.

We are CUPE Local 2926, and our Collective Agreement governs our workplace. Even the Employer must abide by it.

When there is a dispute regarding the interpretation of the language in the Collective Agreement, a grievance is the result. A grievance simply means that you do not agree.

If you believe you have a grievance, please talk to your steward or a member of the executive. More often than not, your grievance can help other members who may be facing the same problem.

13.4 Filing Collective Agreements

Each Local Union will send one signed copy of each collective agreement to the National Office at the end of negotiations. If possible, the collective agreement will be sent electronically.

Bylaws

What are the CUPE 2926 Bylaws?

Our bylaws set out the rules for how our local democratically elects our representatives, and how it is run.

What does the CUPE National Constitution (2019) say?

13.3 Local Union Bylaws

(a) All chartered Local Unions are governed by this Constitution and the bylaws in Appendix B.

(b) A Local Union can make additional bylaws. The additional bylaws cannot conflict with this Constitution or the bylaws of a Service Division to which the Local Union belongs.

(c) Any additional bylaws or amendments must be approved in writing by the National President before they come into effect.

(d) At the request of the Local Union, the National President may approve bylaws that do not comply with Appendix B if there are strong and compelling reasons to do so.

What does our Collective Agreement say about benefits?

Our benefits are negotiated through collective bargaining. Insurance benefits are currently being provided by Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada.

Pensions

What kind of pension do CUPE 2926 members have?

If you are a permanent employee and member of CUPE 2926, you are a member of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS). OMERS is a pension plan that is administered by a board consisting of Employer Representatives and Labour Representatives.

What does our Collective Agreement say about OMERS?

ARTICLE 19.01(i)

OMERS Pension Plan - The Employer shall participate in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System. It is a condition of employment with the Employer that each full-time employee become a member of OMERS, contributing payment as required by the system through payroll deduction. The Employer will contribute an equal amount to the fund to aid in providing a retirement pension.
